smoothing a zoom
by Rick St. Charles on Aug 28, 2008 at 8:17:31 pm

I need to smooth out some zoom shots. They've got a series of slow and subtle jerks. I was using the manual zoom and wasn't as deft as I thought I was being. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Well, here's your choice:

• Many hours -- and I do indeed mean MANY HOURS -- of frustration in AE, compensating for bad camera zooms with animated scaling, while oftentimes losing portions of the picture at the edges... or nesting the comp and scaling the whole thing up to compensate for the lost edges, thus losing resolution, which would require a third-party plugin like Instant HD to resurrect some of the lost resolution.

• Re-shoot.

Which one sounds more desirable to you?

Ha! I like your directness. There's a third option I might go for: live with it! It is pretty subtle. Thanks much--your input is appreciated.

virtualdub with deshaker 2.2 for zooms, tilts etc. is free and just as good as monet.

another trick is smooth out the pan by sub sampling out the jerkyness. use twixtor to slow down 80% then take that comp and put it in a new comp with timestretch 80%, a right click. It will have exact same speed but way less noticable jerks in motion. It's also a great way to turn 29p into 24p.

Thanks, Chris! I'll try it.
