Support Help for AE and DVCPRO HD720 Codec
by Val Champagne on Aug 19, 2008 at 3:15:17 pm

Hi, I am working on a PC Windows XP system with Adobe After Effects 7.0 (from the CS2 Production Suite) and I currently have no support for the DVCPRO HD720 codec. My question is multifaceted:

1. What's the easiest and cheapest way to get support for the codec onto my computer? I read that CS3 has built in support but I can't afford to upgrade my system. If the support needs to be purchased/obtained online, is there a site you'd recommend?

2. Once I have support on my computer, is there an extra step in getting After Effects to recognize the codec or will it work by default?

3. I read that PCs can't support the codec (this may be outdated information). If this is the case, is there a recommended alternate export setting for the footage that my computer and AE will be able to work with without loss of quality?

Any other information/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

you can get support for dvcprohd encoded files with software like raylight from dvfilm. they offer several options, some just read, some allow writing to dvcprohd, some allow support for mxf files, others mov files... i haven't used it, but i've heard its a good option, but there are others.

cs3 will allow import and export of mxf encoded dvcprohd footage natively, but not quicktime (mov) files.

what type of footage are you using mov or mxf. if it is mov, then i assume that someone is creating those for you, possibly from fcp... if that is the case, then you could ask them to send you files in another codec, something more widely supported like lossless animation or photojpeg quicktimes.
