Renders look washed out via Kona
by Bob Pierce on Aug 13, 2008 at 12:12:41 pm

Hey Everyone,
I'm working with a Kona LHE, DVCPRO HD 720 p60. My renders out of AE are looking washed out. I've got color management on, set to 8 bit, HDTV (rec 709).

Out of final cut, I export out a clip with color bars. I bring the clip into ae and set to interpret footage HDTV (rec 709). I render it out with the native codec, DVCPRO HD, 720 p60, drop the render into final cut and it looks totally washed out (on the monitor, via the kona). I've fooled around with all kinds of other color management settings to to avail. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Bob Pierce

I'd check out some settings on your Kona card's control panel:

Codec>RGB-YUV Color Conversion:
Color Space = Auto
Gamma = Auto

That's how they're set on my Kona LHe, and I've never, ever had any problems.

Thanks, Dave
Yep, that's what they're set for. The rendered movies play back washed out in Final Cut, whereas the original footage (color bars) that hasn't passed through AE looks fine. Any other suggestions out there? Am I the only one with this problem?
Thanks you!
Bob

I render it out with the native codec, DVCPRO HD

have you tried the Animation codec?

Yes, I did try that - or at least I tried rendering out uncompressed 8 bit, which showed the same messed up gamma. I also tried exporting as uncompressed out of fcp, then rendering uncompressed out of AE for the same effect. So I guess I can remove the codec as the culprit. Others have had this problem and posted about it here, but none have posted their solution.
Thanks,
Bob
