masking
by Ali Jafri on Aug 5, 2008 at 4:50:38 pm

I'm not really an expert or anything but I've been watching people working at after effects and have wondered about something for quite some time now. Is it absolutely necessary to manually adjust EVERY LITTLE FRAME when animating a mask? Sometimes a few seconds' worth of footage could take ages to mask right. Isn't there any plugin or software that'll automatically snap each node to the new placement of the moving footage? If we can motion track why can't we motion track a mask's nodes (or whatever you call them)?

[Ali Jafri] "Is it absolutely necessary to manually adjust EVERY LITTLE FRAME when animating a mask?"

No, sometimes you can skip a few. That's why you develop masking strategies. Welcome to Rotoscoping!

"Sometimes a few seconds' worth of footage could take ages to mask right."

Yup, it sure can!

Let me ask you this: if such a thing existed, DON'T YOU THINK EVERYONE WOULD USE IT? Of course, some people might happen to like hours of painstaking work, I'll grant you that.

I'm not trying to be mean, but those are the realities of rotoscoping. That's why everybody avoids doing it as much as possible, and why those who are really good at it (and don't mind doing it) get The Big Bucks.
