Hello out there ,
my problem:
i am working with avi files and atm i have a backgroundfile (*.avi) and on i want to show a character cut out by color keying out of one movie file.
I want to create the illusion of an army therefor i copy the cahracter some time always with the color key as an effect , but as i start to render it out the whole process stops instantly .

I suspect AE isn't stopping, but slowing way down: you're making AE do the same chroma key several times over, and it just plain ol' takes longer.
Instead of duplicating the chroma key layer again and again, put the chroma key layer in its own comp. Then use that comp as many times as you need in another comp.
NOW: if your footage comes from an HDV camera, you could have other issues going on that are bringing AE to a halt.
