AE Crash

After Effects worked fine this afternoon, but now it won't open. The error I get is "Unknown Exception", and then it quits back to the desktop.
I'm on an intel iMac, and I am not connected to the Internet. I also don't have disks to reinstall since this is my computer from work and I have it home for the summer.
Restarting the computer did not help. Is there a preference file I can delete or some other quick fix I can try? My other Adobe products seem to work just fine.
Thanks for any help.

quit ae, then navigate to this folder: users/username/library/preferences/adobe/after effects. move the folder called '8.0' to the desktop, then restart ae. this will effectively reset ae to the defaults and generate new preference files.
if that doesn't work, another possibility might be old qt components. you could try moving the contents of library/quicktime and user/username/library/quicktime to folders on the desktop to see if that helps (note: leave system/library/quicktime alone, those are the codecs provided by apple, and unless you actually dragged older components in there, third party components should get installed in one of hose other two locations)

I cant express in words how thanksful i am of you for resolving my after effects problem. I was working on a huge project for a company when i got the unknown exception message and you fixed it.
