lighting a 3D room
by David Wittln on Jul 31, 2008 at 7:41:29 pm

I have created a 3D room with lighting exactly how I want it except where I need it to interact with an object blocking the light path.

I have a door opening where I want there to be light coming in through the doorway as the door opens. I have tried positioning the light behind my wall in 3D space but have not had any luck. And I have also used a separate light which I have key framed so that it comes in when the door opens. But this is not exact and it does not have the proper look I want.

Any suggestions?

The AE cameras can only see the light that falls on 3D layers: they can't see any light shining into the camera lens. Furthermore, AE lights can't make any volumetric light: the glow of a spotlight in a smoky room, for example.

To do anything described above, you'll need a third-party plugin called Trapcode Lux. While you're at it, check out the other Trapcode plugins too. There isn't a dog in the bunch.

I actually attempted Lux (but first time using it) so it did not work for me with creating light through the doorway. It was creating the light in the background without creating the effect I was looking for. Any suggestions of what I might need to alter to make sure the light an move within 3D space?

Are you looking for volumetric (visible light beams) entering the room or are you looking to create a shadow in the room from After Effects lighting?

If you are just looking for the shadow, then use a 3-D solid layer placed directly in front of the light as a gobo. Then, use the linear wipe transition to create the look of a light being slowly revealed.

If you are looking for volumetrics, then you are going to want a third-party plugin like Lux.

Need volumetric lighting. I have tried lux but have been able to get a light that is moving through the doorway. I don't have much experience with Lux and I have been unable to make it work for me.

The other problem I am having with Lux is that it is adding a light to my two other lights I have in the 3D room I created. I only want light entering from behind a door, and being revealed as the door opens.

you may want to check out http://www.redgiantsoftware.com/products/all/knoll-light-factory-pro/

Knoll Lights have great obscuration options.

The other problem I am having with Lux is that it is adding a light to my two other lights I have in the 3D room I created

I'm wondering if a precomp may fix the way Lux is reacting with the other lights.
