by Roberto Torrado on Jul 29, 2008 at 8:11:44 am

Hello everybody, I am a new guy in this forum, this the best forum for after effects that I never seen, and I would like to know if someone knows how can I make crowds.
For example, In a few months I have to make a short film about Napoleonic war in Spain because there is a bicentenary of independece in my city, then I have to multiply soldiers, I have got 10 or 12 soldiers only, because there is not money enough, then my question is...It is possible to make with After effects? if I have 10 soldiers convert to 100 soldiers? if I have two canions convert 20 canions, and what tools or technique do I have to learn?.
ok, excuse me for my terrible english..
kind regards
Roberto

what you could do is film your 10 soldiers in front of a green screen. Then using Trapcode's particular have your particle set to custom and use your keyed green screen footage as the source layer! then adjust the rest of particulars settings in accordance with your scene!

Another way would be to film your 10 soldiers over and over again doing various movements and so forth then bunlde all these shots into one scene placed as how you would see fit!
hope this helps!
Jack

Hello Jack

Thanks for you advice..
I´m very glad to know that there are two ways to making crowds.
Do you know about DVD collection with tutorials with this techniques or any video to study it?.
The second way I think is very "tired" to clean every take...and complicated to recording, situation of the soldiers..etc..
Maybe the first way is easier and you can control the take with more precision but I need a lot of meters of green screen and much more space...
I have to study these two options in deep..
kind regards

Roberto

A quick google search for "crowds with after effects" will give you great resources with at least one video tutorial using particular to create a crowd, and others reverting back to the cow using other techniques; such as card dance.

Brian Maffitt at TOtal Training created the CArd Damce filter several years ago when he also ran Atomic Energy Effects. the original AE for AE effects package came with delightfully thorough training tape, more than 2 hours alone on Shatter.
His Let's a Big Crowd demo for Card dance used two interwoven layers of cards; one for the torsos and one for the arms of each character. The main Card Dance made the two layers move together but the arms were hinged at the shoulders so they could moved separately. This allowed great audience wave effects using z displace to move the characters up and down and another grayscale pattern to pivot the arms over the heads. Seems he had an advanced version that included a head movement option.

Card Dance is very cool.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: "For crying out loud, read the freakin' manual."

Theres an excellent example of what you need at fxguide, achieved by Gareth Edwards for the BBC production of Attila the Hun, with after effects and 3DSMAX.

Have a look at the article here:

Dont miss the video breakdown (link above the first green screen image)

and this one as well:
