8 bit and 16 bit compositions..which to use?
by Nathan Quattrini (buijon) on Jul 24, 2008 at 3:18:51 pm

I am importing some clips from Premiere (Animation Codec MOV on Mac) and want to know if I should be setting the compositions to 8 bit or 16 bit. What's the difference? And if I worked in 8 and need to switch to 16 for better quality, do I need to start over? I want the best quality to export back to Premiere when I'm done in AE

Fortunately, no. Simply change it to a 16-bit project. It will help smooth out the look of the Ramp effect, for instance. But if things already look good in AE, it shouldn't be necessary to go 16 bit.

16 seems to take longer than 8 bit, so only use it if you have to, like color correction or many blending light layers.
