Hi everybody!
I have the following problem:
After Effects works fine for me, until one day it just started to crash when I tried to drag and put any type of file on the composition window!
Ok, the wierd stuff is that when I work an old project or staff it is all right, until I try to put any file from the project window down to the composition!
I tried everything- re install adobe creative suite, remove codecs, update audio and video drivers, even I re install my windows at a point, and then I made a clean instalation of adobe creative suite and it works fine the first 3 days and then suddenly, without any obvious reason - BAAMm! again the same shit-and I am really depressed cause spend days of reading forums, looking for a decision but any ideas how to solve it!
If somebody can help me, thanks in advance!

We all sympathize with your situation, but there is NOTHING we can do to help. Why? You give us no specific information.
We know nothing about the type of computer and video card you have, how much memory you have, the operating system you use, the codecs of the footage you use, the version of After Effects you use, nor how you have certain preferences set in After Effects.
If you tell us more, we can do more than feel sorry for you.

Of course, excuse my impatience!
I use Matrox Parhelia 256mb video card,
IntelCoreDuo 2ghz and 3.25gb of RAM(Corsair)
with Windows XP 64bit edition,Service pack 2, ACE Mega Pack codecs 6.03(recently temporary removed).
I use Adobe CS3, also with Premiere, Photoshop, Ilustrator, Encore.
Also along with adobe I have installed Edius Broadcast 4.6 and Procoder 3.0.
Recently I used to work with standart avi, mpeg2, mov PAL footage, along with tga, jpeg, psd and more.

Hmmm.... I don't know how much help I'll be because I'm a Mac guy and you're on a Windows machine.
You mentioned that you use mpeg2 footage in AE. You shouldn't. Try using AE with NO mpeg2 footage, and see what happens. Here's why:
Dave's Stock Answer #1:
If the footage you imported into AE is any kind of the following -- Native HDV, MPEG1, MPEG2, mp4, m2t, H.261 or H.264 -- you need to convert it to a different codec.
These kinds of footage use temporal, or interframe compression. They have keyframes at regular intervals, containing complete frame information. However, the frames in between do NOT have complete information. Interframe codecs toss out duplicated information.
In order to maintain peak rendering efficiency, AE needs complete information for each and every frame. But because these kinds of footage contain only partial information, AE freaks out, resulting in a wide variety of problems.

Dear Dave,
as I already explained, AE crashed on any attempt to drag down to the composition ANY type of file! I don't use any type of mpeg in my work!
The wierd is that premiere crashed too in the very same way!
I just can't explain it, cause if I open an old project it's all working fine until I try to import and drag a new file!

I have the same issue I'm trying to solve. I have a different system:
Gigabyte EP35C-DSR3 motherboard
WinXp Pro SP2 32bit
GeForce 8400GS 256mb videocard
What we have in common is I also have Edius 4.6 and ProCoder 3. Let's try uninstalling those and see if it helps. It won't solve the problem, but will narrow it down to where the problem lies.

I'm just pissed of this buggy situation, it's pain in the ass,
don't now what to do now, I tried almost everything and any result!
How is it going with you Tim Kurka?
Hope you have more luck then me:)
Cheers

There is clearly something going on with Edius 4.6 and CS3. I did the same thing you did with no luck, but then I did this:
I did a Windows XP Pro install on a new drive to make sure everything was clean. I installed AE CS3 and it worked fine. I installed Edius 4.6, then the problem showed up again in AE CS3. I uninstalled Edius 4.6, then manually removed remaining remnants of Edius in the registry. I thought the Canopus Codec could be the issue, but I left that installed to see. AE CS3 worked fine. I installed Edius 4.5 I got from a friend to run a test and CS3 worked!
I really wanted Edius 4.6 because plugins are now available, but I will not give up AE CS3. Grass Valley is aware of the situation, but for some reason this is not a problem across the board. Some people are running 4.6 and CS3 fine. I will just go back to 4.0 for now. Another solution if you want is to install another instance of Windows and have Edius on one and Adobe on the other. You just have to reboot every time you want to switch applications.
