AE CS3 hangs after the last frame of every render!

I'm having a strange problem--every time I try to render something out (this includes everything from very large Quicktimes to still image screenshots), the machine hangs after the last frame completed. At times it will hang for 3-5 minutes before eventually chiming and telling me that my render is complete. If I force quit the program before it un-sticks itself, the Quicktime is corrupt. If I try to render out parts a multi-machine image sequence, it hangs after -every- completed frame.
I'm running CS3 on a quad core Intel Xeon MacPro machine, version 10.4.11 of OS X. This problem has persisted ever since we purchased the machine six months ago, and doesn't seem to occur with any other computer running any other version of AE in the office.

i've heard of others having problems similar to what you describe. here is a thread from a month or two ago describing a similar issue.... the original poster found that it was linked to some issue with third party hardware, but some others noted problems with network drives and pro tools...
some things you might try:
render to an image sequence and see if you still have see the problem
try disabling multiprocessing (preferences>multiprocessing, uncheck render multiple frames simultaneously) and try a render.
move the preference folder to the desktop (on mac, it's the folder called '8.0' in users/username/library/preferences/adobe/after effects). this will cause ae to create all new preference files with default settings, try rendering with those default settings just to see if that may help.
