Motion tracker trouble

I am having a problem using the motion tracker which I have never had before. When I enable it I just get a black screen which means I have nothing to use as a reference to track.
The only different thing I am doing this time is I am using a still image which I used an extract matte on. Could this have anything to do with this? And is there a way I can still tack this layer to the footage?

Hi Chris,
Are you trying to track the footage or your still image?
Right-click on your video footage and choose Track Motion. Then change your "Target" to be your still image. In fact, I usually create a Null Object to store the tracking data, then use Parenting to match the move. I just find that gives me a bit more flexibility.
Hope that helps,
Ben

Hey Ben,
Thanks for your help. I tried this and I managed to get the tracking data on to the layer. I can even see the tracking data at work on the layer by itself and it's a perfect track. Yet when I look at the comp the layer does not move at all. Is this strange?
