Shadow Snakes and other critters

Hi. i'm trying to make realistic looking "shadow creatures" in the shape of lizards, snakes, and other basic insects to crawl on a dirt ground and then up people's legs to cover them in shadow.

what would be the best approach for something like this? any ideas?
