After effects and 3d max merging...correct way?
by Ricky Milling on Jun 20, 2008 at 11:34:15 am

I have created a tank in 3d max and filmed footage of someone looking around a corner down a street and ducking back in before looking again, i was wondering what would be the best way to combine them, as for some shots the entire of the tank wont be in shot as it is covered by the wall and parked cars in front. the secene ends with the tank rolling past the entrance to the alley way.

I was just wondered which would be the best option take the footage from AE and put in in MAX or vice verse, can anyone please help and give some advice as it been driving me nuts about how togo about it properly.

Thank you in advance

Ricky

In my opinion, it is usually better to take a frame of your live action footage into 3d max and use it as a reference or background for setting up the 3d max camera. Once you match the camera position and orientation, you render out your cg elements with alpha channels and import them into afx. If you are using footage with the camera locked off or still on a tripod, you can create masks from your footage to superimpose over the cg elements and really place them into your scene. If you shot the footage freehand or if the camera moves, you have a whole new set of problems to deal with.

Hope this helps
