Masking woes...
by malcolm DeSoto (Malcolm Man) on Jun 19, 2008 at 10:30:18 pm

Hey, need to mask out a Wave form that I generated in AE.

Usually if you precomp the layer, Masking works just as it should. However, even when I precomp the solid that has the wave form effect applied to it, I still can not mask it.

Any ideas? Can you just not mask some effects?

What wave form/effect? How do you want it masked? Need a few more details please.

Effect > Generate > Audio spectrum.

I wanted to mask out a portion of the wave form so that a building could go in front of it. No, I can not duplicate the building and place it in front of the wave form.

I need to be able to mask the actual layer/comp that the wave form is applied to.

[malcolm DeSoto] "I can not duplicate the building and place it in front of the wave form. I need to be able to mask the actual layer/comp that the wave form is applied to."

Okay, if you say you can't duplicate the building footage, mask it so you only see the building, then put it on top of the waveform layer.... well, then, I guess you can't do it. I'm scratching my head over WHY you can't do it, but I suppose it's a moot point.

However, you should be able to do just what you want to do. Especially if you applied the effect to a solid, then precomped it -- making very sure to move all the attributes into the precomp -- and masking the precomp.

I presume you've already double-checked that the effect did indeed move with the solid into the precomp, and that you didn't precomp the solid and leave the effect applied to the precomp. I further presume that if you double-clicked the precomp layer to open it in its own window, you selected to see the mask and not the Anchor Point Path or something.

How about trying to use a solid as a track matte?

Well, because of time constraints, I had to employ a crude work around. I'm not sure why I could not mask the wave form. Maybe I just need to restart or some thing (the comp has a lot of effects).

Dave, the reasons that I can not simply mask the building are many. I'll post the whole situation tomorrow when I have more time.

I really appreciate your guys help.

Thanks!

Precomping like Dave suggested lets me mask that precomp.

Just make sure you precomp (move all attributes) the solid with Audio Spectrum, by selecting both layers, the solid and the Audio Layer that it references, before you, Layer>Precompose. They both need to be in that precomp for audio spectrum to work.

It then masks like any other layer for me.
