multiple layers using same matte

Alright...I can't figure this out, and it's probably an easy question.

I have a line I want several layers to appear from *behind* So my workflow would be to draw a black solid and place it along this line, and use track matte to have the layers appear from *behind* it.

Question is, I have 10 different logos that I need to do this, which would require duplicating the same black box 10 times and placing it above the layer.

I tried to use the effect "Set Matte" but didn't have any luck getting it to work. Seems to really be an effect that track mattes replaced.

Have you tried the Stencil Alpha Blending Mode?

That would apply the effect to ALL layers below it...and the layer needs to visible...correct?

Duplicate your black box.
Set the lower black box layer to Stencil Alpha.
Precompose that layer and the 10 logos.
This way the stencil will only affect what is inside that Precomp and your other layers will still be opaque.
