"Error: problem invoking Levels" etc..?
by Jimmy Brunger on May 29, 2008 at 3:33:24 pm

Does anyone else ever get this message all of a sudden, whereby the error message box and certain docked tabs get weird light purple vertical stripes on them? AE then locks up and crashes.

Both myself and my colleague have been getting this message ALOT!

It's getting quite crippling to be honest. If I've got all my layers switched on at certain points when there's alot of CC done on the footage (only at OTR res mind you...) I get the beach ball of death and then this and then....well, AE dies.

Ok, there's quite a bit of CC done on some of these clips but it shouldn't be crashing on this surely - it didn't used to and it seems totally random.

Any thoughts guys?

if your system specs are correct, you're running ae7 on a macpro... many of ae's color correction effects are opengl accelerated. in my experience running ae7 on a macpro, any opengl accelerated effect gave me problems unless i did one of two things...

1. just disable opengl completely in the ae's preview preference. uncheck the use opengl acceleration, and set previews to use adaptive resolution.

2. if for whatever reason you want to continue to struggle with ae7 and keep opengl active, only apply opengl accelerated effects to adjustment layers. for some reason that seemed to help most of the time. (i think there is a list of opengl accelerated effects in the help file/manual, although you may have other third party effects that use opengl).

Thanks Kevin, I didn't know AE's CC effects used open GL...didn't think ANYTHING in AE actually made use of it! ;-)

I actually have OGL turned off completely anyway - due to Knoll Light Factory getting nasty with it on..

Anymore ideas?

Thanks,
Jim.

i haven't used ae7 on a macpro since we got cs3... i can't remember which osx 10.4 version i was using back then, but there may be an issue with ae7 and the later 10.4 versions....

since windows and palettes are having redraw issues, i'm tempted to say it may be an opengl/graphics card problem. the fact that two different machines are having the same problem makes it less likely that it is a hardware problem, but it could be driver issue that may have been part of a later os update.

in cs3 there is an option to disable opengl for interface drawing acceleration, but i don't think ae7 has that option. you might try removing the opengl plugin from the ae7 plugins folder just to see if that helps.

Turned out it was a comp I had applied some CC to and then Radial Fast Blur + Shine. It needed to be continually rasterized for the shine to work properly and that was crashing it. I took the shine+radial off and applied them inside that comp, expanded comp size to allow for bleed out and then it worked!?!

Very random. Seems like a fairly normal workflow for me, but AE just goes mental with it and can't handle it. Here's another weird anomaly - this section in question WOULD preview with continual rast on, but wouldn't render!

Go figure.

Sooner we get CS3 the better!
