cs3 crash on click and drag

Hey there,
I've got the strangest After Effects crash I've ever seen. Very recently, AE cs3 has started crashing any time I try to drag anything in the program. As an example, I can open up some of my previous, complicated projects, render them out no problem, but as soon as I try to select and drag a layer, or an asset in the bin, or even a preset from the preset menu, after effects just closes. No error message or anything, the window just disappears. Sometimes it takes longer than others, but I see the sort of outline around the object that you get when you drag it, but it never moves. Instead, AE just closes.
I've gone through all the general troubleshooting tips. AE ran fine for a long time on this exact same computer. I reinstalled it completely (including deleting all the old registry entries in between installations,) but the new install has the same problem.
The only thing I can think of that changed since it used to work is that I removed my floppy drive and added another hard drive. But I can't really figure out how that would be related.
Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone had any last ditch ideas before I reinstalled windows xp completely :-/

i would contact adobe on this... however, just to give my two cents, when i hear about things crash when clicking and dragging, i start to become suspicious of video card problems... you might check to see if your video card drivers are up to date. also, there may be a setting in ae in the display preference that enables opengl for palette/window drawing, you could see if changing that setting has any effect.

After messing with this for hours, I think I assumed incorrectly that it's an Adobe error. A few other programs are crashing in a very similar manner (especially vegas 8, which gives a handy error message that seems to lead to user32.dll being the culprit.)
Thanks for your help anyway. Looks like I'm in for an all-nighter of windows troubleshooting.
Edius 4.6 causes After Effects CS3 to crash. Sometimes. There have also been reports of Premiere crashing, and on my system, Vegas 8 pro crashes as well.
There's no resolution at the moment, except to uninstall Edius.
