How do I get the red/yellow burn effect from this clip?
by Sam Spurgeon on May 26, 2008 at 3:06:37 pm

Hi there, just wondering if anyone can advise me. I'm trying to achieve the look in the following clips

To the left and right of the screen there are sometimes red/yellow "burns" (there's one on the right at 30 secs in) and also burns covering the whole screen are used to transition to another clip (43 seconds in and a good one at 45 seconds). Any help greatly appreciated, I use After Effects and Premiere.

Thanks

Sam

Hi Sam,

It looks to me like you could simply create a solid, blur it out a bit with Fast Blur, movie it to the edge, and if you wanted, you could play around with a few different transfer modes.

Hope that helps,

You can get that color bleed thing with Levels on a masked Duplicated Layer or on a masked adjustment Layer (probably best choice here). Set Levels keyframes then move the In Put White (Upper Right White Triangle).

Levels (Individual Controls) is probably best, as you can set keys (and also use expressions) on R G and B, like keyframe the Green Input White. Very Cool.

There are other ways but this is quick.

I have done this effect using a few techniques there was a tutorial knocking around somewhere about 2 years again using photoshop layers and animating them with masks n blend modes using different grades of orange and reds.

The main problem with this is that they dont look organic enough so my preferred method is... use of stock film burn footage. use this with colourama effects and screen and multiply blend modes.

to get the burn at the side of the frame only jus use a mask on the footage with a bit of a father and job done.

there are a few places you can get the footage from do a bit of googling on film burns and light leaks and you should come up trumps.

Hi Sam, just wondering what you found out about this effect, I'm trying to do the same thing in FCP/AE but not sure how to make it look classy and sassy. Seems like this effect is pretty popular so I'd think there is a well worn path here, but I don't see much on the boards. Is it usually called a 'Film Burn' effect? Any ideas?

Thanks!

sorry dane, been really busy lately and not had a chance to try it out. probably going to go down the stock footage route though.

Thanks

Sam
