Constrain bubbles inside a share
by Michael Patten on May 21, 2008 at 2:46:27 am

I would like create a beaker/flask shape and add "liquid" and "bubbles" inside the shape to create a science type animation. I have tried using the Foam effect but cannot figure out how to constrain the bubble to be inside the shape. I am new to AE and am currently using the trial version of AE CS3. Any suggestions? Thank you.

You can constrain the bubbles to be inside a shape with the use of a Flow Map.

Create a black and white image in the shape you want. White will be where the bubble go, black = no bubbles. You can use a white solid, mask it off in the shape you want, then precompose (so it's rendered first).

In Foam, twirl down Flow Map, select the layer with the black and white image in the shape you want. You might have to tweak the Flow map Steepness to keep the bubbles inside the shape. And you can move the Producer Point to the bottom of the flask so the bubbles originate there.

Additional (no pointless since you've successfully finished the project) information: when using Foam, the Flow Map wants a gradient. Do a precomp and apply blur some blur. The problem is that some of the particles can inherit enough energy at birth (from the other physics settings) to allow it to simply miss the pixel on the flow map that lies between black and white. This can send one or more bubbles over the map's edge for no apparent reason.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: "For crying out loud, read the freakin' manual."

David, thanks for the additional information. I was curious why some bubbles left the edge. Seemed kind of odd.
