Piece of cake. Work in 3D.
• Create a cube using square, square-pixel black solids top & bottom, and black with red circles on the sides. Use a precomp to make the sides. Set the sides' layer property to Transmits Light, or whatever they call it. Put a null object at the very center of the cube, and parent all the sides of the cube to it.
• Move the null so that the cube surrounds a light... not a spotlight, but the one that shines in all directions.
• Rotate the null.

I'm guessing Dave that you are using the box as a "lighting projector". If so, the all the boxes along with the lighting transmission set to 100% also need the "cast shawdows" property turned to "only", so that the red is projected.
