Disk Cache Problems =(
by John Donley on May 19, 2008 at 6:33:35 pm

Hello,

Im working on some hd comps in After FX CS3 and Im having ram preview problems.

I have an 8core mac pro with 16gigs of ram. Im on os x 10.5.2, and i have the most up to date version of After Fx. I have multi processing turned off (because I use Nucleo Pro 2). I have Max Mem set to 120% = 3.0 gb and Max Ram Cache a 60% = 1.8 gb, and I have Disk Cache enabled at 50gb.

With all of that I would think that I could ram preview anything and not run out of memory but sometimes, at full quality, I get less than 2 seconds of playback. When I look in the cache folder its empty. I made sure that I was the owner of that folder, but that didn't change anything.

Anyone know why it might be that After FX is not allowing writing to my internal HD?

Thanks for your time.
John

ram previews won't get written to disk, the rendered frames only get cached to ram... also, being a 32-bit application, ae can only address a maximum of 3gb for any process for ae...

a 1080x1920 hd frame is about 6mb... so, in theory you should be abel to cache about 300 frames to ram. the ram available for ram preivews is the max ram cache amount, so you should have a maximum of 1.8 gb availble for previews. however, that is the max value, you may have less if ae needs more than 40% of the ram to render the frames. at least that is my understanding of the ram cache setting...

before you go and up the max ram cache, adobe doesn't recommend increasing it beyond 60%, and states that it should never be increased above 90%... just fyi

you might try edit>purge>all when you start seeing your ram previews get shorter and shorter, it may help free up some ram for the preview.
