How to make plugins?
by Jeremy Fabiano (rashan) on May 19, 2008 at 9:10:56 am

Been curious about making plugins.. searched google, but I only seem to find things on BUYING plugins, or companies that will MAKE plugins.. nothing on how to do it at home..

Anyone have any info? Links? Tutorials?

Not asking for a step by step answer (but by all means if you're bored go for it ;) ) - just the location of info to teach myself how to do it...

Had some ideas for some plugins, but have no clue where to begin..

There are a couple of links to related threads beneath this thread, which shows that searching for related topics is always a good idea. I would add that you may be better off starting out making presets, which can achieve quite complicated effects if needs be. It's much easier than getting into the mechanics of plugins.

thx - yeah I played a little with presets.. but I thought they were only for ONE effect? can you combine multiple effects under one preset?

like say you wanted glow + beam + trapcode shine under the same?

I thought only plugins could pull that one off... ?

yes, you can add several effects with specific values, you can even animate values and other parameters (like position, scale etc.) or add and have those included in the preset, you just need to select the effects and any other adjusted parameters, then choose animation>save preset. then any time you recall the preset, it will apply all the effects and settings that you chose to include when you saved the preset.

I recently recorded a 5 min video tutorial on creating multiple effect animation presets with keyframe animation, and just uploaded it. You can see it

.

I don't mention it in the vid, but you can also add expressions to presets. Just select the property to which you've added the expression before saving the preset.
