AE CS 3 freezes after importing a quicktime file
by Thomas Krupers on May 16, 2008 at 1:14:39 pm

Hi there,

After Effects CS 3 keeps freezing after I import a quicktime file to the project. I tried importing other file types such as .avi or .png and those seem to work fine. I tried the following options:

1. Remove all Apple products from your system and clean up the registery. Then reinstall Quicktime only.

2. Delete the AE prefs folder under document and settings.

3. Reinstall the graphic driver.

4. Move the OpenGL file to the desktop and restart AE.

None of them removed the problem.
I work on an Acer Aspire 5290G laptop (Intel Core2duo T7300 2.0 ghz, Geforce 8600M GT, 2GB DDR2) with Windows Vista 32 bit.
I really appreciate any help given, thank you in advance!

It's too bad you tried all the difficult things first. You should have looked at your footage.....

Dave's Stock Answer #1:

If the footage you imported into AE is any kind of the following -- Native HDV, MPEG1, MPEG2, mp4, m2t, H.261 or H.264 -- you need to convert it to a different codec.

These kinds of footage use temporal, or interframe compression. They have keyframes at regular intervals, containing complete frame information. However, the frames in between do NOT have complete information. Interframe codecs toss out duplicated information.

In order to maintain peak rendering efficiency, AE needs complete information for each and every frame. But because these kinds of footage contain only partial information, AE freaks out, resulting in a wide variety of problems.
