I want to make a crater

hey everyone, so I want to make an effect and am not sure if after effects is the right tool for it. I'm going to have agreed screen shot of some feet slamming into the ground. When that happens I want a crater to appear (really just cracks in the rock) and have dust fly up. I think I can manage the dust in motion but am not sure what to do abouut the rock cracking. Any ideas?

im not quite sure if this will work, but you could try the following:
get your ground/rock/whatever and precompose it, then go into the precomp, apply shatter (maybe glass preset?) play with the settings until it looks right...
then scroll through the timeline until it looks about as "cracked" as you need (probably only .5-1.5 seconds into the shatter animation)
then when you have the timeline indicator where you want it, go back to the main comp and trim the end of the precomp to the current time indicator...
move around as needed.. and that *SHOULD* in theory work..

I'm not 100% sure I know what you are looking for but I think that Andrew Kramer's tutorial 'The Healer' should show you some techniques to work with..
