Is it possible to do this effect in AE without any other 3D software?

I want to do a very quick (couple seconds) effect of a person who turns into liquid metal, then melts into a puddle. Examples: Capri Sun Commercials, Terminator, Alex Mack. I'm thinking there may be a way to do it with just AE because I don't need to animate a liquid metal person, just have a sitting person turn into liquid metal and melt.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

That is pretty much always done with a 3D package like Maya. You probably could cobble together a similar effect just using After Effects, but it will fall far short of the examples you cited.

That's what I figured. I'm taking a Maya class in the fall (which means I'll have a system with Maya on it to play with), but I still would like to try a simple version solely in After Effects. Thanks.

I have no idea how and i've never done this but you could try and stack a few effects on top of each other. For instance, use Trapcode Particular to "melt" your greenscreened/masked man into a pile of particles on the floor and then apply a blobbize effect over the top. It won't be perfect but for a very quick shot you might be able to get away with it. if you don't have trapcode particluar you could try to use CC_Balls or somthing?

Hi - I came across this a few days ago - bloody clever and, of course, for photoshop. I haven't looked at it properly but you may find it of some use:

That's pretty neat. I've used some Eyecandy stuff in photoshop to do chrome before, but I never thought of doing it with just different curves and layers. Thanks. Maybe this combined with some other stuff might work out.

I have Trapcode; that's kinda what I was thinking of trying, thanks. Either that, or maybe trying to build a person-shaped blob out of particles and animate a mask to change from the real person to the particle blob underneath. Thanks.
