Fractal Noise jumps when moving too slow.
by Bryan Coleman on May 14, 2008 at 3:38:20 pm

Hi,

I have been trying to create a background using Fractal Noise.
the fractal looks pretty good, exactly what the client wants, but I'm having issues with it moving so slow that it has a "jerky" motion, it isn't smooth.
My settings are

Fractal Type: Dynamic
Noise Type: Block
Contrast: 23
Brightness 9
Uniform Scaling Off
Scale width: 216
Scale Height: 8060
Then I have keyframes set up on the offset turbulence:
-444,960 @ frame 0
1668,960 @ time 59.28
Complexity:0
Evolution:
0 @ frame 0
15x +0.0 degrees @ 59.28
Cycle Evolution on

I know that's a lot, but i can't figure out, how to make the fractal move that slow, without it jerking. I even tried to speed it up by 2...basically moving the keyframes up by 30 seconds, then pulling that into a new comp and using time Remapping to slow it back down by 50%. And turned on the frame motion and then pixel motion, but nothing seems to work. It still continues to have the jerky, unsmooth motion. It's poppy.

any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Bryan

I plugged in your parameters and got this. Am I way off here?

hah...wow, that definately isn't it...i'm checking the settings I posted right now to make sure it was all the same.

Now that I'm looking at it, I definately needed to put the comp size...1080 width, 1920 height. Basically widescreen, but vertical.

However, even with those new dimensions, the blocks are moving super fast.

Also, the time of the comp should be 1 minute, then the first keyframe is at 0 and the last is basically at 59.28.

I did make a mistake on the complexity...it should be 1.0.

Other than that, everything I wrote was correct. Thanks for the reply, i hope this helps!

Bryan

I didn't get that it was a one minute comp. Didn't know if you were working at 59.98i or something. Anyway, check this.

(bigger file this time, might take a sec to load)

If this is smooth to you then I would suspect you're having disk playback speed problems. Are you used to working in HD frame sizes? If not, that's most likely the problem.

I just realized that it's flopped, but it shouldn't matter.

Thats definitely more smooth than mine, but even when i render mine out it still plays all "herky-jerky". the final render for me is about 800 megabytes.

but just now I tried all the same settings in a new comp that is 720 x 486 using a solid that is the same size as the comp, and I'm still getting the stop and go motion. It seems like the slow motion of what I'm creating is can't be calculated by After Effects because there's information in between frames that's missing, and it's creating that stop and go motion. I just don't really understand what's going on.

Can you tell I'm bored at work?! HA.

What codec are you using?
What is your frame rate?

I'm not applying any slowing effects to mine.

I used Animation codec to render as a QT. Frame rate is 29.97.

Its just strange that it shows up in my RAM previews and also my renders...

Back to my original question then. Do you usually work with HD frame sizes? It takes a lot more computer power to play back this many pixels compared to SD.
Have you tried playing back on a faster system?

according to our IT guys, we have the fastest computers this side of the Mississippi. They didn't really say that, but these are serious machines. But it certainly wouldn't surprise me if my issue was that large scale. However, even when i created the 720 x 486 comp, using a solid that's the same size as the comp, I was getting the same results. So that would imply it can't possibly be the machine. Right?

Yep. If you want you can email me the project file and see if it does the same thing here. I don't have another solution. If you want I can just render out here and post to my ftp for you, but that's just a workaround heh?

Let's stop bogging up the cow though. Here's my email
