where's the dang camera?!?!?

OK, so I feel like I'm going nuts here...
Using CS3 AE and for some bizarre reason when I add a camera to a comp, i can't see it. It's there mind you, but there are no handles or wireframe point of interest or camera to move around.
If I adjust the parameters of the camera it responds, but you can't see "it". if i change my view to say top or custom, i can see the camera, otherwise no. I've tried command shift H to reveal and hide layer properties, but it just switches the light icon on and off. CAMERA GONE? WTF?
I'm so used to moving the cam around manually but i can't seem to work this way.
any one else have this issue? any help appreciated,

Here's a weak analogy. When you're inside a car, you don't reach outside of it and pull yourself around - you drive it. AE has a specific set of tools to "drive" your camera around. But unlike driving, in AE you can step outside of the car/camera and pull it around. That's what the side, top, and custom views are for.
What is it you're wanting to see from the camera's perspective? a big lens sticking out in front of you? You don't see that when you look through a real camera - you see what's being photographed. Just like AE's Active Camera view.

I completely understand your analogy, but didn't the previous version of AE work differently? The camera was always there right? I just recently upgraded the mac and the software...and for some reason I thought I was losing it...
