Hi,
I have just bought a new macpro 2x3ghz quadcore. That leaves me with an old g5 quad that i don't really know what to do with.. Is it any point in making a render farm for after effects cs3?

In my opinion, yes. I have a number of old machines that work together. Some of the issues? Fonts & Plugins.
My machines slide way down the scale, so I frequently work on my fastest machine, then simply open the project on the next fastest and render there, so I can continue with what I'm doing on my main machine.
Network rendering works pretty well, once you iron out any problems (which shouldn't be too bad between 2 machines), but it's EASY to fix problems with a comp on a single machine.

It depends on the the nature of your work. If you do highly complex, render intensive projects, then every CPU cycle you can get is important.
But if you're working on a project that can RAM preview within a few minutes, and render in a few hours, then the trouble involved with project, plugin and system management, to control system-wide renders, may be simply un-economical.
I use Nucleo Pro on a 4-core Mac, and find there are few projects that can't be rendered while I'm working on something new on the same machine. Only you know if you're requirements are more intensive.
