Thin lines in Trapcode 3D-Stroke
by Hans Meier on May 7, 2008 at 4:02:14 pm

Hi everyone,

is there any way to avoid those nasty "steps" when working with very thin lines (thickness around 0,5) with Trapcode 3D-Stroke.

Sorry, but video is a medium of limited resolution, and thin lines simply don't do well in it. You need to make your lines thicker.

Hi Dave,

concerning Video I get your point, but I'm working for Computer-Display Output only. So I use square pixels and no interlacing ...

Well, to illustrate my point, I'll use the example of my own very nice, three-month-old, 23-inch Apple Cinema Display Monitors.

Their resolution is 1920 x 1200. This means they display about 83 pixels per inch.

However, even a fairly low-resolution photograph on a printed page has about 300 pixels per inch. Do you see a discrepancy between high-resolution monitors and low-resolution print?

Furthermore, it doesn't help that you're trying to display white on black, which shows any flaws better than almost any other color combination.

Make your lines thicker.

Dave,

thank you for your help and your explanation.

One last time - here is my problem...it would look so nice without the steps. :-(

You seem reluctant to accept the obvious. Make the lines wider, and the problem goes away. Third time.

setting the Feather value to 100 can help.
you could also try to create 1px strokes in a precomp at double resolution, and scale it down in your main comp. maybe use subpixel positioning.

as dave said, the steps will not go away, but it might get better than what you have now.

Try upping the thickness of the line, then thin it back out with the Simple Choker effect. To get a line that is thickness 0.2, start with a line of thickness 1, apply Simple Choker at 0.65, then duplicate the layer to increase the brightness.

Modifying the alpha gamma slightly can help.
