One Tree Hill Title Sequence
by Ernst Kruger on May 5, 2008 at 10:04:50 am

I have tried and failed miserably...

Does anyone have any Ideas as to what was done to the footage on the one tree hill title sequence to give it that orange glow?

Most of the footage used come from the actual show so It has to be some kind of effect.. I have tried using the blending modes with all kinds of blurs but just can't seem to get it to look anything like what they have going there.

Looks a bit like 'trapcode's starglow' with 'warm star' preset. Just guessing
With ordinary 'glow' can get a similar feel...

Try creating an adjustment layer at the top of your layer stack, then apply these effects in the following order:

Color Correction > Tritone
Color Correction > Curves
Blur & Sharpen > Box Blur
Blur & Sharpen > Box Blur

Set the Tritone effect to blend with original some (this is subjective, try starting at 50%) and pick an orange-ish color for the midtones.

Now use Curves to really mess up the image =) Don't worry it won't look this way in the end! Crush the blacks down, everything that ends up black in this stage will not glow in the final composite. Bring the whites up to blowout the glow a bit more (if desired).

Now on your first Box Blur set it to Vertical only, use iterations of 6 or so and a radius of 12 or more (again, subjective).

On your second Box Blur set it to Horizontal only, use fewer iterations and a smaller radius. This should give you a vertically streaky blur with a small amount of horizontal blur.

Now set the Adjustment Layer's blend mode to Add.

This may take some tweaking, but it should work pretty well... If you really want blown out glows you might consider working in 32bpc (set this in the project settings) and playing with your Curves effect more, but this will increase render time.
