Random jump in video levels upon rendering comp
by adam taylor on Apr 30, 2008 at 12:26:51 pm

I'm having a really odd problem with my current project.

I am doing a simple rotoscoped wipe using an animated mask to reveal a change of clothes for a character. There are two shots that make up the second clothes set and so i have precomped these.

I'm working with pal widescreen 10bit uncompressed footage, and rendering back out to the same format.

When i play back directly on the timeline the effect works perfectly. As soon as i render it (or do a Ram preview) i get several frames into the clip and the video levels leap by 5-10% (according to my scope). I have rendered this almost a dozen times now, and the frame when the leap occurs appears to be random.

I have checked every clip and they all seem normal. I have no filters or keyframes or anything i can think of that could cause such a leap. In fact, all i have are the pre-comp and one other video track with a single feathered mask to do the wipe with.

Any suggestions of things to try? I have already rebooted the mac, and used macjanitor to clean out its cache etc.

thanks

I've seen something like this before. I recommend making a new project and importing your project as a file. Open your comp again and see if the problem persists. Also turn off Open GL if it's on - although I don't think Open GL is involved in rendering.

hi joey,

tried all those things and no luck. I even tried starting a new project from scratch but it still did it.

In the end i got round it by making the run up to the bit i needed longer, so i could edit the jump later, and also re-correct the levels in color grading app later.

Its quite worrying because i think i just saw it happen on a completely different project...but i could have just blinked whilst watching the render!!
