The key to your query is Open GL. Turn it off.
Sure, the AE propoganda talks about supporting Open GL and it sounds great. But in truth, AE supports only a subset of Open GL, and it is a right royal pain (if not downright impossible) to build a project around that subset of capabilities.
When it comes to Open GL, most AE practitioners eventually throw up their hands, mutter several profanities, turn it off and get on with life.

[Matthew McNulty]"THAT SIMPLE?"
Yup.
"the program will run the same-ish? or what might noticeably happen? longer render or no fast previews?"
Yeah, about the same. Besides, after all is said & done, your options seem to be:
1) keep Open GL on and AE doesn't work, or
2) turn it off and AE works.
I know which option I'd choose.

been looking for someone who might be able to point me in the right direction... i am interested in how the elements are put together... whether it is the flares or 3d stuff... don't care...

I see you picked good stuff to look at.
Those glints could be various lens flares from Knoll Light Factory, which lets you customize your own. The 3D-looking stuff is from a 3D application, and you can bet on it... VDO and Giant Octopus don't fool around trying to coax 3D out of AE.

here's a question for you...
you must lose all but two 3rd party plugins... if you don't millions of small furry animals will perish needlessly...
which two do you keep?
in case you want to see furry animals in distress...
your budget has been hammered by piss poor management that bet you stations future and real estate advertising...

I scrounge around engineering for an old computer and keep running the older version of AE that uses the existing third-party plugins as a legacy. Yeah, jumping from machine to machine would make planning projects a pain in the neck, but it's worth it to keep my options open.
On the new machine, I then keep 1) Scopo Gigio and 2) the Trapcode suite of plugins.
"your budget has been hammered by piss poor management that bet you stations future and real estate advertising..."
Should that actually read, "your budget has been hammered by piss poor management that bet yourstation's future on real estate advertising"?
I hope you're looking forward to moving to a different market! I feel your pain, but nevertheless, get that demo reel put together!
Then duplicate ANYTHING you want to keep and get it OUT OF THE BUILDING. Buy lots of data DVDs and DO NOT leave them lying around -- take 'em home! Start working on it today. Expect to sneak around a lot after hours.
With such geniuses occupying the corner offices, you never know when the next shoe will drop. Be prepared.
