HD 3:2 pulldown issue
by Shay Carriere on Apr 17, 2008 at 4:23:01 pm

I've got what I'm told is 1280x1080, 29.97, upper field first footage with pulldown removed during capture through FCP. Upon dropping footage into a same sized comp in AE, I'm getting every fourth frame repeated onto the fifth which is making masking annoying.
The footage when viewed with Quicktime looks fine, no repeats.
I've tried some techniques to fix this but nothing is working.
Any ideas?

wow. that was an easy fix.

Next time i'll know to mask hi-res footage at 100% and full. apparently having it at half size makes the frames look like they're repeating.

[Shay Carriere] "I've got what I'm told is 1280x1080, 29.97, upper field first footage with pulldown removed during capture "

you have some conflicting information in you description of your footage, which may be a problem as you continue....

you said the footage is 29.97 with a pulldown removed... if the pulldown was removed, then the frame rate should be 23.976. so, either the pullldown was not removed, or the footage is actually 23.976fps...

do you see any interlacing in any of the frames? it wouldn't appear on every frame, but in a pattern of every 4th and 5th frame. if so, then you should remove the pulldown manually in the interpret footage settings (select guess pulldown) and work with the footage in a 23.976 comp. then, if needed, you can render and add the pulldown back in (in the render settings, set to render fields, upper, and any pulldown cadence should work). but if you are handing this to someone else, ask if the need the pulldown back in.
