Is OEM software safe?
by Nathan Quattrini (buijon) on Apr 4, 2008 at 2:46:22 pm

I am looking into getting Magic Bullet and Trapcode Particular. If I buy OEM I`ll save hundreds...but is it safe? Is it only missing the manuals etc?

Be careful. OEM software, especially when talked about in Spam, is just another word for pirate software. Proper OEM stuff is bundled with other things. Like the copy of Cubase you get with a soundcard.

Many companies don't even do OEM software.

If you're worried, check with the company concerned (Red Giant Software, in your case) to find out whether it's legit. Most importantly, only buy from legit sources. If the offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

All the best,
Ben

Maybe it's safe, but I'd say it's pirated, with somebody else's serial number. At best.

I wouldn't buy it.

I am not aware of any OEM deals for any of the Trapcode or Red Giant products. I would be willing to bet money that these are illegal copies.

I wouldn't do it. They will likely break and you will be out your money with no support.

That is what usually happens and I can't count the number of people over the years that have ignored the warnings around here and have been bitten hard.

Trapcode Particular is not that expensive and there are articles in the COW that can teach you to mimic the Magic Bullet look. If you prefer out of the can, then Andrew Kramer at VideoCopilot.com has a disc for sale (I can't remember the name) that does the looks you want for far less than Magic Bullet.

Best regards,

Hello,

They do not do OEM's, Digitaljuice had a special offer recently of the Magic Bullet Looks and Magic Bullet SUite, and Particular.

I think the offers have ended it was like $400 for the Magic Bullet Suite which had the followings;
Magic Bullet Looks
Instant HD
Frames
Colourista

Yes any email about cheap software is usually dodgy, unless it was from an approved Redgiant reseller.

Thanks,

Leo
