Current time indicater playback is jerky

Hi people of the world,
I have a problem. I am trying to lay cues in after effects cs3. The cue laying is innacurate and the playback of the current time indicator (the red line) is jerky.
I have never had this problem before, though I have moved to a new dell computer using vista with dual apple 30inch monitors.

Ahh yes, I have used the wrong terminology as I work in events. What I should have said was "layer time markers" or just " markers"
I often tap out markers to a soundtrack using the asterisk key and then watch the playback to see that those cues, sorry markers, are in synch with the music. But the markers seem to be completely out of synch with the music, and the red playback cursor jerks accross the timeline window, when it always use to move along their smoothly like a responsible driver in low traffic.

If you're only adding markers to an audio layer, you can try this: before you set up your RAM preview, turn off any video layers, drop the comp window's resolution way down to like 1/8 or something, and the comp size down to, say, 12%. You can go lower if you want, because you don't need to look at video.

Thanks Dave, but unfortunately the problem occurs without any video layers there at all. Nothing but an audio layer. I'll see if it is jerky without any layers.

Hi Dave,
All your advice has been good so far, but I suspect it is something else. I can't think why it would be jerky when it use to be smooth on far more complicated projects. I am going to check that vista and all the window and adobe updates are current.

Ah, of course. I used to design and run lights, got out of theatre long before digital controls took over. Then we started doing big 32-projector slide shows. The cue track held the cues in sync to the soundtrack and they were called "hooks."
Different trades, same thing, different names.
Audio preview in AE has always been dicey Hope you get it figured out. But one way to get it to work is replace the audio files with as low quality and low sampling rate as you can tolerate.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: "For crying out loud, read the freakin' manual."

Hi David,
I have never been involved in the analog days of events. We do all of our proposals in photoshop and After effects, and then thanks to this digital age we can take our proposals into the production side using our own software and hardware. So after effects has been fantastic for that. I love playing in it, except of course when it goes wrong and forces me to yell and swear at inanimate objects.

I have loaded cs3 on my old XP computer and the playback is smooth as smooth peanut butter, whereas it is jerky as crunchy peanut butter on the dell machine running Vista. I hope someone recognises that and can help

Oh. I may be a Mac guy, but I am aware that there are known issues running AE8 on Vista. AE just plain ol' doesn't play nice with Vista.
What's the fix? Has a fix even come along? Like I say, I'm a Mac guy. But you can check on the AE forums on the Adobe web site. I recall seeing a big, long thread about Vista.
