I've checked every button, nothing is muted. I can hear sound through my Adobe Premiere, but when I copy and paste the same clip into AE, I can't hear anything!
I can see the waveform in the timeline so I know the audio is there, but I just can't hear it...
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Aza

Hey kids, what time is it? Time for little AE 101!
Always remember that AE is a compositing and effects application. It's NOT an editing application, and it doesn't work like one... not even remotely. It's a whole different way of thinking. AE has to render EVERYTHING, audio included. That means you can't play anything in AE. So keep those fingers off the space bar!
With that in mind, let's think about audio. If you wanted to hear some, what would you have to do? Yup, render it. Okay, so how does THAT happen? AE gives you four ways:
• Render & play a given amount of audio: hit the period key on the numeric keypad. AE thinks for a second, and then plays a length of audio that you can set in Preferences.
• Scrub audio: slowly move the timeline cursor while holding down the Command key (Ctl key Win). If you move the cursor too quickly, you get squat.
• Play a few frames of audio: hold down the Command key (Ctl key Win) and click and hold on the timeline cursor. AE plays a few frames of audio (about 10), and I'm pretty sure you can set how much it plays in Preferences.
• RAM Preview: this lets you see audio and video together. Hit Zero on the numeric keypad, and AE renders out audio and video until it fills up the available RAM, or it reaches the limits of the Work Area (see AE Help for a definition of the Work Area). Now, you might have to let the RAM preview play through a couple of times to get things to sync up. It happens occasionally. You may also have a big comp (e.g. HD), and AE can't play back the video at the comp's frame rate, in which case you'll need to reduce the comp window's resolution.
And that's how you hear audio in AE. If you still can't hear it, you have other problems going on.
