character on a bendy 3d layer (example)

i saw this video and want to create something similar. how did they do it? did they use a plugin like '3D Layer Warp'? and if so is there anyway of getting a similar result without having tohttp://www.passion-pictures.com/flash.html#myreel=v856&page=myreel buy a plugin?
