mpg to avi

I record with my cam in MPEG-2,but I can't edit it with After effect or any other programe.Can u give me a solution or a name of a programe,with which I can make it from mpg to avi without loosing quality?

If you're working in Windows, I'd say Adobe Premiere.

You can convert using MPEG Streamclip its a free software that works well.
