Field order problems
by Esteban Duperly on Mar 17, 2008 at 4:43:29 pm

Hi there!
I’m working on a project and I’m using both vector files brought into AE from Illustrator and jpg files. As far as I know I don’t have to interpret and set field order for these sort of files as they don’t bear any interlacing information. During ram previews everything works just fine but problems come in when doing the final render. Although I leave the field render off in the “render setting” parameters my movie seems to be taking the “lower filed first” option. When I play it back on tv the odd “comb teeth” lines show up and when opening the new rendered file into AE “lower filed” is also showed in the info palette. I doubled checked the “render settings” and “output module” to make sure I wasn’t doing something silly. Does anyone know what could be possible happening? I appreciate any help!

Tell us what footage type you are using.

Hello Ian, as source material I'm using Adobe Illustrator and jpg files. I'm exporting my movie as .avi and .wmv files.

Hm. Is it possible to look at the settings for your rendered video? I use Quicktime (command + i) to see the specs. Just to be sure you're actually seeing interlace.

Also, what codec are you using to export this AVI?

Hi Ian, quicktime gave me this info: DV/DVCPRO-NTSC 640x480, millions. I didn't say anything about fields.

To render the AVI file I'm using Microsoft DV as codec.

Thanks a lot.

Let me guess: you've tried other output codecs?

Unless you're going to DV, I'd try to squeeze a little more information into your final render. DV looks a slight bit like ass.

[Esteban Duperly] "quicktime gave me this info: DV/DVCPRO-NTSC 640x480, millions....To render the AVI file I'm using Microsoft DV as codec."

The codec could be the problem. Re-render, trying two things: 1) a different (and higher-quality) codec, and 2) using the Best Settings in the Render Settings. Best Settings renders with no fields.

Ok, I'll try a different codec. Thanks a lot

I would try rendering it again using the Quicktime codec and just render it either progressive or uncompressed.

If it works that way, you can start compressing it little by little until you get what you want at a manageable filesize and look.
