Sonic Boom ripple, displacement map?
by Christopher lavelle on Mar 5, 2008 at 9:48:51 am

Hi guys, please forgive me but i'm new to after effects, however i have searched high and low for this.
Do you have any ideas about how to create that circular distortion you get when after an explosion for exmaple
http://www.trapcode.com/gallery/bandemo_h.mov
I assumed it would be a greyscale displacement map but this seems to be hitty miss.

So to clarify , after the initial explosion there are some distortion waves growing larger then imploding,.

All your help is greatly appreciated.

many thanks

chris

That looks like the CC Ripple Pulse effect. It's a weird effect to use. You have to key frame the Pulse Level property for it to show up.

Set the property key frame where you want the pulse to begin, then set another key frame with a different value right after the first one, then you'll see the pulse take shape.

I think you could achieve this look with other effects. Maybe a the CC Glass effect applied to an animated mask moving out from center.

Nate
