Render crashes
by Mars Sanford on Mar 4, 2008 at 6:27:36 pm

Hey there,

I've been looking all over and have tried several things, but my AE seems to lock up (no pop up dialog msg) when I have QT installed.

I've tried downgrading QT to 7.3, but the only time I can get AE to not crash during a render (RAM or batch)is by uninstalling QT. I am running AE 7, upgrading is currently not an option, unfortunately.

Mem/Cache settings are:
Max Mem usage 120% = 2.0 GB
Max RAM Cache 60% = 1.2 GB
Prevent DLL Address Space Fragmentation (never heard this mentioned but I'm thorough)

Enable OpenGL is checked bc there was no improvement unchecked.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I've been un/re installing QT for 3 days now. Any leads appreciated.

QT 7.4.1, which fixes the problems QT 7.4 created, is available for windows boxes.

Open GL is pretty much useless in AE, so don't even bother with it. Disable it. I could go into detail why, but I don't have the time.

Thanks Dave!

Strangely enough, I adjusted the secret settings to purge after 50 frames and I'm fine now, or so it seems.

I have no idea why, if this was the solution, Quicktime would have any bearing on the success of my renders, but I un/reinstalled so many times I can't believe it was a coincidence.

Is there something deep in QT that is hogging memory AE is trying to use?

Computers... hate figuring them out, yet chained to them for life :)

You mean you didn't hear about the big QT 7.4 scare from about a month ago?

Apple released it and many users simply installed it in knee-jerk fashion. It was awful with AE. Very toxic. And Apple never makes it easy to revert to an older version of QT.

So if you did indeed try to revert, you may have missed something which is screwing you up, which is why I recommend QT 7.4.1. If AE then keeps screwing up, you can then eliminate QT as a source of your misery.

Weird... I did hear about it and thought I had checked and confirmed I was on 7.4.1, however now I wonder if I had been hallucinating as I'm rendering fine with 7.4.1 and untouched/reverted Secret menu settings.

As I said... computers... yeesh. Nothing else could make me feel this doubtful about my own knowledge than these lovely little boxes.

Thanks again for the help though Dave.

Do you have any QT files as source video? Or any MP3 audio files in your project?
