round mask wont rotate on its own axis!! driving me mad!
by david lieberman (shroomly) on Feb 20, 2008 at 6:16:38 pm

hello,

I've tried just about everything. Im using 3D stroke (trapcode) on a solid layer. The layer contains about 60 paths that create a symetrical circle. The problem is that when i try to rotate this circle very strange things happen.

When i try to rotate it using the plugin on the Z axis, it seems to stretch or squish the circle and rotate it like that.

When i do it on the actual layer's attributes for rotation, it rotates find, but when the layer reaches 45 degrees, it drops the circle to the bottom and then brings it back up. why this happens is beyond me!!?!? ALL IM TRYING TO DO IS MAKE THESE PATHS (WHICH ARE ALL ON THE SAME LAYER) ROTATE LIKE A WHEEL IN A CAR. i dont want them to shift down, and i dont want the rotation to look uneven either..

Thanks for the help.

thanx for the help.

Got a still of the comp window and timeline, showing masks and keyframes?

there you go...

its with a butterfly composed of two layers now, but essentially the same thing..every time i rotate the body or the rest of it it jumps at the exact point where i snapped the image...that seems to be at 45 degrees if im not mistaken, and the once again 45dgrs before its done a full rotation...

Three questions:

Are those butterfly wings on just one solid, or two?

Where is the anchor point(s) of the wings?

What's the position in z-space of the wings compared to the body?

the wings are one layer. the anchor point is dead in the middle of them. and the zspace as identical to the other layer, which shouldnt matter anyways because im only trying to rotate the wings seperately and it creates the jump every time...

it looks as if the lyaer of the wings is trying to resize itself when it is flipped...it gets squahsed so to say...why would that happen? i've never seen that happen in 5 years of using AE

thanx for the help.

[david lieberman] "im only trying to rotate the wings seperately and it creates the jump every time..."

You mean you're not trying to FLAP the wings, like a butterfly flaps its wings? And what happens to the layer in your current animation if you just turn off any efffects temporarily?

And if all you're doing is rotating the wings like the wheels on a car rotate, why do you need to use 3D layers in the first place?

my aim is not to just rotate them aimlessly... im trying to build a composition with a lot of rotating shapes and this is just one test. 3D or not, im using the layers rotation attributes and this is the result. i've tried it without the effects and still happens.

thanx for the help.

[david lieberman] "im only trying to rotate the wings seperately"

How are you planning to rotate the wings separately if they're applied on the same layer?

"im tryhing to rotate the wings seperately" is a response to whether both the body and the wings are on the same layer... i dont think you guys understand what i mean.

i dont care if the whole body moves as one shape... the fact theres two layers is irregardless. All im trying to do is to rotate the layer and it simply doesnt rotate evenly.

thanks for the help guys but i think this is some kind of bug i managed to create.

thanx for the help.

What is the pixel aspect ratio? Is the correction switch on?

ive tried it both with or without with no difference... it does look like the layer is trying to correct its size when it reaches the point where the mask jumps..

thanx for the help.

REALLY SORY TO HAVE WASTED ALL YOUR TIME... the problem does have its roots in trapcode 3d stroke...it actually ISNT happening when i turn the effects off...so it has to be somewhat connected to 3D Stroke...why this happens is still beyond me..

thanx for the help.

I got the solution!!!

it has to do with anamorphic layers vs square pixel..
my layer had to be square pixel, which then doesnt cause it to resize itself when being rotated!!

for anyone who wanted to know..

cheers for the help guys!!

thanx for the help.
