AE mattes

Looking to improve my keying. I know that there is a way to use multiple layers to improve green screen work. The thing I can't figure is how to assign the alpha of one layer (tuned just for the matte) to another (tuned for enhanced images). Tried 'set matte', no go. Suggestions? I used to know how to do this but its been a long, long time.

are you talking about using the track mattes where you base the opacity of one layer on the alpha or luma of another. I so, just place the layer whose alpha you want to use above the layer upon which you want to apply and select "alpha map" of the layer above. The switch is in the composition window.

The switch is in the comp window? where? Layer - track matte - alpha is what I indeed wanted, but I didn't know there was a switch in the comp window. i don't see it anywhere (choose it from the menu)

look to the bottom of the after effects window. This is where the render queue dialogue and composition tabs are. In the extreme lower left hand corner you will find three icons. If you move your mouse over them, the first will say, "expand or contract the layer switches plane." The second will say "Expand or Collapse the Transfer Controls pane. The third will say, "expand or collapse the in/out/duration/stretch pane. You want to click the second which will expand the comp window to include the "TrkMat" dialogue drop down menus. simply use this dialogue box and choose the alpha matte of the layer directly above as I described above.
