can i import a path without it becoming a mask?
by david lieberman (shroomly) on Feb 15, 2008 at 11:51:22 pm

Hello,

I've seen a tutorial on creative cow on how to import paths and motion paths. the result was that it imported a mask in the paths shape. but is there any way to actually import a work path from photoshop which is close (as a closed circle maybe) without it becoming a mask? I dont need the fill i simply want the lines to use trapcode 3d stroke with.

The only solution i found so far was to auto trace every mask i import...

Thanks for the help.

dave

thanx for the help.

After the mask is applied to a layer, hit MM on your keyboard to open the mask properties and change the drop down menu from "Add" to "None". Now you have a path!

You can also skip Photoshop and use the pen tool (or the Rectangle/Circle tool) and create open or closed masks right in AE, (you will still have to change closed shapes to "None") that's how I create paths for 3D stroke.

P.S. If you create paths in AE, create a New Solid and apply the paths to it, that way your footage won't be effected.

Hope this helps (and that I wasn't telling you a bunch of junk you already know!)

...And bear in mind that AE has it's own language. In AE-speak, a path is considered to be a mask that isn't closed. Using the pen tool to make a mask, you can make a simple, curved line. Ah, but it isn't a mask... it's a path. Go figure.
