distorted audio coming out of after effects
by james moore (James Moore) on Feb 13, 2008 at 5:48:30 am

i have a piece i've done, shot in 48-16 audio. i've been working on it in after effects and i have exported the clip in the animation and h264 codec and each time the audio ends up sounding like it's in a tunnel. the same clip sounds fine in final cut, so i know it's not the original audio recording.
any suggestions? maybe a different codec? thanks in advance.

Is the audio clip compressed? AE doesn't handle MP3s well. I tend to play it safe and add my audio with Audition after rendering.

If you used any nested comps or precomps in AE, check to see that the audio switches on them are turned off.

I agree with Simon: DON'T render out the audio with your video; you easily can marry them up again in FCP.

I also see that you refer to the process of file creation as "exporting", which is what you do in FCP. However, in AE there are two processes for file creation, exporting and rendering, and they are not the same. You almost always are better off rendering in AE, because you have more options and better control. So if you are indeed exporting from AE, you'll want to consider rendering out of AE using the Render Queue.

And as time goes by, and third-party compression software gets better, it's becoming pretty much standard operating procedure to render the highest-quality file you can out of AE, and do the compression in the other software. In your case, I'd try rendering out of AE in the proper codec for your FCP timeline, exporting the FCP timeline by reference (i.e. NOT self-contained), then dragging the resulting file into Compressor.

If you're fortunate enough to have something like Sorenson Squeeze, figure out a good workflow to use that. It's probably easier to use than Compressor.
