Problems importing a image sequence with AE_CS3 takes so long

I have the after effects CS3 Professional edition and i have problems importing an image sequence... It takes like 5 minuts to import a 700 frames sequence (300 MB). And AE goes to not responding.
Is it something i have wrong from my preference settings?
Does anyone have this problem?
I have a pc with a core2quad 6600 cpu, 4Gb of ram and a Nvidia quadro 1500.

I've found that AE won't import more than about 30,000 frames (SD). More than that and it just sits there. So for half hour programs (just over 53K frames @ 29.97) I have to break the files into separate directories of not more than 30,000 each. I have yet to find WHY this is so. I have a NTFS RAID, top drawer hardware, latest updates, etc.
Uninstalled and reinstalled AE3 (the whole suite, actually) a couple of times: no difference.

You're right!
I was trying to import a sequence from a folder that had more than 20.000 files, although the sequence was only 300 frames. I suppose AE goes trough each one of the files in the folder.
