Best method to create 3D paths - Discuss
by jay brown on Feb 12, 2008 at 4:59:33 pm

Hi

The more I study this After fx lark the more demo's/video's/adverts I see that clearly have some sort of graphic, most of the time with an effect attached, flying around on a predefined path.

I've seen loads of tutorials showing random flight of particles around 3d space but Ive seen little in the way of tutorials or people discussing this workflow.

It strikes a little odd as its such a common theme in peoples work.

Anyone fancy sharing their preferred workflow for this phenomena or point me in the direction of a site that will unlock these mysteries.

Thanks in advance

Here's one in-depth exploration of using 3D motion paths:

http://www.motionworks.com.au/

Look for any and ALL information on John Dickenson's Fox Classics spot. The spot is about 2 years old now, but the information pertaining to it is still valid, and some of it goes back 2 years.

Search the COW tutorials for John Dickenson's tutorials, too. He knows his AE stuff. There's also an article in the Crative COW Magazine about the Fox Classics spot.

That'll get you going.

If you think that site is cool... ever heard of Video Copilot? :)

John gave an extendend demo/tutorial concerning the spot that Dave mentioned. And the best news? He even recorded it!

He doesn't use any 3d motion paths, but it's still good info.

Do you have a specific example of what you're going for?

Yeah Video Copilot is a very good resource site indeed

Id surprisingly not heard of Johns site b4

This guy posted his demo reel on the cow a while back on a question about Echospace.....Ive been using it for inspiration

http://creativebloc.com/recent_pure.html

I know its a combo of alot of hard work, not to mention echospace and particular .....but I think it is really tight and really like the control shown on the particle effect and the spiral of sunflowers.

Theres tons more stuff I could reference but this is the level I am currently trying to achieve with my own work, and seems to encompass just where my learning is at.
