After Effects Screws Up Windows Sound and FLV Playback

I'm using After Effects CS3 running on XP Service Pack 2 on an Intel Quad Core with 2 GB RAM. I've also noticed this problem on my machine at work, which is a Dell XPS with XP as well.
After starting After Effects, sound is partially disabled. These are the three main symptoms:
1) Flash applications (either websites or locally running SWFs) cannot play sound
2) The Windows volume control on the system tray doesn't produce its usual beep upon adjusting the slider
3) FLV video, whether played in a website like YouTube, or played locally in an FLV player, only play for the first couple seconds, without sound, and then stop.
However, QuickTime, iTunes and Windows Media Player can still play sound.
This happens as soon as AE is launched, every time, and persists until the machine is restarted. Closing AE doesn't solve the problem.
Any ideas where to start with this?
