24p in AE
by Chuck Obernesser (titan3ium) on Feb 8, 2008 at 1:08:49 pm

Hello to all,
I edit with FCP. Shot some 24p footage for a promo I am creating. I exported it as an animation and when I imported to AE it looked horrible. I re-exported it as a h.264 and it looks better, but I was curious if there were a better setting than that to export it?

Thanks
Chuck

exporting it as lossless animation won't make your footage look worse, there is most likely something else wrong with your export settings...

can you be more specific about what looks horrible? if it is a color shift between fcp and ae (cs3), search the ae forum for 'color shift', 'cs3' and 'fcp' for an explanation and workflow/settings recommendation.

As Kevin says, a little more information will help a lot. I'll dwell on frame rates:

[Chuck Obernesser] "I edit with FCP. Shot some 24p footage for a promo I am creating..."

First question: HD or SD? What was your capture codec? If it was SD or HDV, did you remove the 3:2 pulldown?

"...I exported it as an animation and when I imported to AE it looked horrible."

Well, how did you export from FCP? Did you export individual clips, and what were their frame rate? Or did you export from the timeline at 23.98? From the timeline at 29.97? Was the timeline set for fields or frames?

Kevin has already asked the "please define the term, 'horrible'" question.

As a rule, 24p is not a really great frame rate if you're unaware of the snares involved. You would be absolutely FLOORED by how good 30p looks, and you have absolutely none of the frame rate issues! You edit the same way, you use AE the same way.... it's just plain ol' easy.

If someone showed you a 24p clip and a 30p clip, you would be VERY hard-pressed to identify the proper frame rate of each.

and if they were viewing it on an interlaced tv, they would probably say the 30p looked better...

Hi

Sorry to piggyback on this thread but it is very pertinent to my work at the moment.

I have been asked to pitch some movie titles and the footage that I will be given is 35mm 24fps. I have zero experience with film and all the talk of unusual frame-rates, pull-downs, cineon/log-lin (I understand that a bit) is spinning my head and seems like a deep dark tangled forest.

Can anyone recommend a good primer?

The 24p woes of those in NTSC-land are different from those in PAL countries.

I'm not sure what the term "pitch some movie titles" actually means, but let's just say it means you have to make movie adverts for air on TV in the UK.
I'd be tempted to get the movies telecined in HD at 25 fps, then cut the promos. When all done, I'd drop the pitch of any the film audio by a factor of 24 divided by 25.

Now, if you are in reality making open title sequences for feature films, no sweat! Work at 24fps, and life is good.

Hi Dave

Thanks for replying and I'm sorry if I was being a bit obscure!

By 'pitching' I simply meant that I have been asked to suggest a design direction for some movie titles but without any obligation from the producers to accept them if they don't like the ideas. I don't usually do this but it's too good an opportunity to pass up.

Anyway, you make it sound easy! Which of the AE presets do I use (2K, 4K, Cineon)? How do I ask for the footage? And what is the standard way of giving the finished titles back to the production? As far as I know the film is primarily for theatrical distribution and then a showing on UK television.

Cheers

Ah, it's for a real-live motion picture! Your task becomes easier: the frame rate is 24.

Please understand, I work in TV. I've never worked with image sequences like 2k, 4k, or Cineon; there's never been any need. I wish I could be more help.
